Civil Unions in Malta and Gozo

Same sex marriage became legal on the Maltese Islands when The Civil Unions Bill was first introduced in September 2013. The bill grants civil unions the same rights, responsibilities, and obligations as marriage, including the right of joint adoption. Parliament gave final approval to the legislation on 14 April 2014 by a vote of 37 in favor and 30 abstentions. It was signed into law by President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca on 16 April and published in the government's gazette on 17 April. The first civil union was performed on 13 June 2014.

Before the 2008 elections, the Malta Gay Rights Movement sent a survey to all major political parties asking them for their views on the recognition of same-sex unions. None of the parties supported same-sex marriage. However, all of them supported recognition of same-sex unions to some extent. The governing Nationalist Party supported extending some rights to cohabitating same-sex couples. The Governing Party supported recognising "same-sex families and partnerships", although it was unknown whether this would be in the form of unregistered cohabitation or registered partnership. National Action supported civil partnerships that would grant to same sex-couples some of the rights extended to married couples.

A few words from Tony and Brian

An Irish Wedding at The Country Manor

After 10 years together we decided to make our commitment official and after visiting the beautiful Island of Malta for a number of years we hoped it would be possible to have our ceremony here. We found Dream Days Malta on the internet and we were overjoyed when Mariella and Mark confirmed that they could cater for our ceremony. From the first few emails and phone calls we knew it was going to be magical and looked forward to the day. With lots of help from Mariella and Mark we organised our ceremony in 6 months. Without their wonderful service and help this would not have been possible and decisions on every aspect of the day were made so simple. By providing an image or a description of our cake, flowers, car no request was too much and we always got correspondence to say it was no problem. We had 30 for our ceremony on a very warm September evening in the Fabulous Villa Arrigo in Naxar, and all we had to do was arrive and be welcomed by our guests.

The ceremony that was held in the fabulous grounds under the shade of two large trees was out of this world and so special with our nearest and dearest in our company. With the amazing surroundings, the music, our vows and our input in to the ceremony style, after mixing the sands of commitment we felt truly blessed to have had such a unique experience.

We also had our evening meal and reception in the Villa after our photographs on the hillsides of the Island which were an amazing backdrop for our memorable day. Everything about the day was just perfect and was hard to believe with Mariella's and Marks help that such an experience was achievable from home in Ireland.

If you want to a memorable day on a truly breathtaking Island, we recommend Dream Days Weddings to make it happen with their personal and exceptional service and attention to detail.

Thank you Mark and Mariella,
